About

Wheatley Windmill is a Grade II Listed 18th-century octagonal tower mill, one of only a handful remaining in the UK. The mill was restored and preserved by a local volunteer group for several decades before being purchased by a private owner. We assisted the new owner in achieving Planning Permission for a storage building to house a private collection of historic agricultural and milling machinery and provide a new access for informal parking within the paddock adjacent to the windmill. This helped the opening up of the mill to the general public as well.

The mill is located within the Green Belt, where there is a general presumption against development. We successfully demonstrated that the proposed building was an appropriate development within the Green Belt, that it would not harm the openness of the Green Belt, and that there would be significant benefits to the public interest of the Listed Building.

The additional facilities will add significant interest and value to our educational and open day activities.
Specifically, we expect the benefits will be:
- to increase our visitor numbers
- to raise our revenues from visitors, thus securing our financial future
- to enable us to demonstrate further steps in the milling and food production process
- to enable us to maintain and operate the mill as a working exhibit
- to discourage inappropriate commercial development of the windmill structure
As such, the proposal has our unanimous and enthusiastic support.
